Siouxland Coronavirus Cancellations



As on March 31st, there is at least one reported cases of COVID-19/coronavirus in Nebraska (at least 172 cases and 3 deaths), South Dakota (at least 108, including one death), and Iowa (at least 497, including 7 deaths).

There are confirmed COVID-19 cases in the following Siouxland counties:
  • Clay County, IA
  • Crawford County, IA
  • Lincoln County, SD
  • Monona County, IA
  • Sioux County, IA
  • Turner County, SD
  • Union County, SD
  • Woodbury County, IA
  • Yankton County, SD

This post will share school and event cancellations within 2 hours of Sioux City that are related to coronavirus. I will try to keep it up to date, but I do not run any of these organizations, and I encourage you to seek out their individual websites and social media to confirm closings that affect you. 

Local K-12 School Closings Due to Coronavirus

  • Governor Kim Reynolds recommended on 3/15 that all Iowa schools close for 4 weeks. This recommendation is not mandatory, so parents and caregivers should check with their individual school district for more details. The Iowa Legislature passed a law that exempts Iowa schools from the usual requirements for days and hours in a school year, so time off due to this pandemic will not have to be made up.
  • The Sioux City Public Schools and Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools are closed for 4 weeks beginning 3/16
  • All South Dakota K-12 schools closed effective 3/16; expected to last for at least one week
  • Omaha Public Schools
    • Omaha, NE
    • Closed beginning March 16th, with activity packets available for elementary school students, and assignments for middle school & high school students to be e-mailed

  • Many other Nebraska schools are closed; please check with your children's school to find out their specific closure dates and details. 

Local & Regional College Closures Due to Coronavirus

  • Morningside College-extending spring break
  • Western Iowa Tech Community College-moving to virtual instruction
  • Briar Cliff University-moving to virtual instruction
  • University of South Dakota
    • Vermillion, SD
    • Spring break now extended through 3/22
  • University of Iowa-moving to virtual instruction 
  • University of Northern Iowa-moving to virtual instruction
    • Cedar Falls, IA *not in Siouxland, but affects many Siouxland students*
    • Effective 3/23 through at least 4/3
  • Drake University-moving to virtual instruction
    • Des Moines, IA *not in Siouxland but affects many Siouxland students*
    • Effective 3/23 through at least 4/3
  • University of Nebraska, Lincoln
    • Lincoln, NE *not in Siouxland but affects many Siouxland students*
    • Classes cancelled for 3/16-3/20, and will move to online only after spring break

Sioux City & Nearby Event & Attraction Cancellations Due to Coronavirus

Most area restaurants are OPEN, but not for in-person dining. Instead, they're offering options like drive-through, delivery or carry-out only, including many that don't usually offer those options, so please check with your faves, especially local businesses!

  • Awesome Biker Nights 2020 cancelled
  • Promenade Theatre closed until further notice
  • Sioux City Public Library closed to the public effective 3/17. Many fun online options exist through their website, including ebooks, free downloadable mp3s, and more!
  • LaunchPad Children's Museum closed until further notice
  • Dakota City, NE Library closed until further notice
  • Sergeant Bluff Community Center closed until further notice
  • Sioux City Public Museum's Big Dig Fossil exhibit closed until further notice
  • Dancing with the Stars Live at the Sioux City Orpheum Cancelled, previously scheduled for 3/15
  • Siouxland Garden Show-will be a virtual show for 2020! more details coming soon
  • Sioux City Art Center's Hands-On Gallery closed until further notice
  • Westwood Show Choir Jubilation
  • Sioux City Symphony 
  • Events in Sioux Falls limited to 250 or fewer people
  • Museum of Visual Materials
    • Sioux Falls, SD
    • Closed for two weeks, beginning 3/12
  • Prajja Center for Yoga & Holistic Healing
    • All classes and events cancelled until further notice, (and their statement on slowing the spread is well worth reading!)
  • Sioux City Bandits football
  • US Hockey League
    • Season suspended until further notice
    • Includes both the Sioux City Musketeers and the Sioux Falls Stampede
  • Sioux Falls Skyforce Basketball (and the rest of the NBA G-League) 
    • Season suspended 
  • Sioux Falls, Omaha, and Sioux City St. Patrick's Day parades 
  • NAIA Women's Basketball DII Championship Tournament at the Tyson Events Center
    • Cancelled effective 3/12
  • Nebraska State Boys Basketball tournament 
    • NOT cancelled as of noon on 3/11
    • Closed to fans who are not immediate family of the players to reduce the possibility of spreading COVID-19
  • Iowa Special Olympics Mid-Winter Games
    • Cancelled, previously scheduled for 3/13-3/14 in Iowa City. 
    • *This event is more than 2 hours away, but involved Siouxland athletes*

Omaha area cancellations and closures

  • All Nebraska east and east central region Special Olympics events 
    • Both practices and competitions are cancelled until further notice
    • Includes all previously scheduled March events
  • Henry Doorly Zoo closed from 3/16-4/1 or until further notice
  • Lauritzen Gardens closed until further notice
  • Durham Museum closed until further notice; watch online for digital learning options!

Recommended Self-Quarantines Due to Coronavirus:

  • Anyone who participated in or attended the Special Olympics basketball tournament in Fremont, Nebraska on 2/29/2019
