May 2021 Siouxland Events

Every month I bring you the best things to do in Sioux City and Siouxland, from storytimes and crafts to music festivals, streaming concerts, and holidays from silly to serious. This month, some of the highlights include May Day, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, opening days for the Sioux City Farmer's Market and the Explorer's Baseball seasons, and the last day of school for Sioux City Public Schools, Heelan Catholic Schools, and many other area schools. Plus tons of other fun!  I hope these event listings help inspire you to go make some happy memories with your family this month!

    • May Day
    • NAIA Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament at the Tyson Events Center
    • 9am: Live Healthy Iowa 5k & Kids 1k Fun Run at the Sergeant Bluff Rec Complex. More information here.
    • 10:30am-noon: Saturday Family Art Workshop: Zentangles at the Sioux City Art Center, $7 per project, kids 7 & younger must be accompanied by an adult helper. Masks required.
    • 11am: First Saturday Family Storytime: Piggie and Elephant Extravaganza hosted on Zoom by the Sioux City Public Library. Activity kits available for pickup at the Morningside Library ahead of time with supplies you might want to use during the storytime! Register online here
    • 11am-3pm: Tie-Dye shirt day at the LeMars Art Center, $20 per person, sign up online here
    • 1-3pm: Healthy Kids Day event at Miracle Field in Riverside Park, hosted by the Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA, *FREE*
    • 1 & 2pm: Great Plains Zoomobile at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center for an outdoor program! E-mail the center at SOlson@SiouxCityLCIC or call (712)224- 5242 to register your kids.

    • 7:05pm: Sioux City Musketeers hockey take on the Fargo Force in the Western Conference Finals, at the Tyson Events Center. Tickets here.

    • Lowe's Mother's Day Basket Planter Kit Pickup (reserve online ahead of time here; these will definitely all get claimed so as soon as you're sure you want one, sign up!)
    • 6am: Early Morning Bird Hike at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, RSVP required!
    • 8am to 1pm: Sioux City Farmer's Market
    • 9am: Live Healthy Iowa Kids Track Meet for ages 6-14, free to participate and winners can advance to the state meet in Marshalltown! Register here by May 5th.
    • 10am: Bird Identification: Warblers at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, RSVP required!
    • 10am-3pm: Ho-Chunk Village Farmer's Market in Winnebago, NE 
    • 10:30am-noon: Saturday Family Art Workshop: Hot Air Balloons at the Sioux City Art Center, $7 per project, kids 7 & younger must be accompanied by an adult helper. Masks required.
    • Noon: Mother's Day Grand High Tea at the Browns Century Theater in LeMars, more info here.
    • 1pm: Bird Identification: Sparrows, Tanagers, Grosbeaks, and more at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, RSVP required!

    • 3pm: Kids in the Garden at the South Sioux City Library
    • 7pm: SLRM Late Models Northern Invasion w/ IMCA car racing at Park Jefferson International Speedway.

    • 9am: Donkey Dash 5k at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve
    • 9am to 2pm: Community Trunk Sale at the Tyson Events Center
    • 10:30am-noon: Saturday Family Art Workshop: Signac Self-Portraits at the Sioux City Art Center, $7 per project, kids 7 & younger must be accompanied by an adult helper. Masks required.
    • 1-2:30pm: Painting in the Studio: Picasso Inspired Paintings at the Sioux City Art Center, $10 per project, kids 8 & younger must be accompanied by an adult helper
    • 2pm: Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre presents Sal Fink, Catfish Wrangler LIVE at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. In-person attendance limited to the first 50 people to sign up, but the performance will also stream live so everyone can catch it!

    • 10:30am-noon: Saturday Family Art Workshop: Totem Poles at the Sioux City Art Center, $7 per project, kids 7 & younger must be accompanied by an adult helper. Masks required.
    • 10:30am: Once Upon an Artist storytime & art time at the Le Mars Art Center, $5, for ages 2-5 with an adult helper, 
    • 1-2:30pm: Painting in the Studio: Mandalas at the Sioux City Art Center, $10 per project, kids 8 & younger must be accompanied by an adult helper
