Summer is a great time to read, and our local Siouxland libraries do a great job of supporting summer reading with fun programs for kids (and sometimes for adults!) Here are some of the great summer reading programs happening in and around Sioux City for summer 2022 at local libraries and at stores and restaurants:

Library Summer Reading Programs:

Le Mars Public Library

The Le Mars Public Library is hosting summer reading programs for kids, teens, and adults, with fun challenges and prizes open to each group! 2022 themes include "Ready Beyond the Beaten Path" and "Oceans of Possibilities." To register or for more information, visit their website.

North Sioux City Community Library

The North Sioux City Community Library summer reading program sign-ups are available on their website, with registration open from May 21st through June 2nd and events beginning June 6th. You can find the form on their website.

Orange City Public Library

The Orange City Public Library summer 2022 reading program includes logging for prizes through July 16th, plus lots of fun special events. For full details, visit their website.

Sioux City Public Library

The Sioux City Public Library is hosting summer reading programs for all ages, using the theme of "Read Beyond the Beaten Path" for their summer 2022 program. The actual logging and prize contests will be run through the Beanstack app, and will be open from June 1st through July 30th, 2022!
The SCPL summer reading program will include lots of fun programming, and the kick-off events are:

  • Duke Otherwise concert to kickoff children's summer reading program, Wednesday, June 1st at 10:30am at the Morningside Branch of the Sioux City Public Library. We saw Duke Otherwise when he performed at the Perry Creek Branch a few years ago, and my kids had a blast!
  • Trivia Night to kickoff the adult summer reading program, on Wednesday June 1st from 6:30 to 8:30pm at Buffalo Alice on Fourth Street. The event info on the library website sound like there may even be a chance to win free books at trivia night!
Families can also come to any branch of the library to pick up reading packets during regular library hours! The swag bags each year from the library are really fun, but optional.

Other summer reading programs:

Book People

Book People is holding a summer reading program for kids in kindergarten through 8th grade. To participate, kids should read three books from Book People's recommended reading list, and three books of their choosing, fill out the form, and then return it for an $8 gift certificate at Book People they can use towards the book of their choice!
You'll find the forms at Book People or on the Book People Facebook page (at time of posting, the 2022 forms are available on Facebook and in store, but the website seems to still have the 2021 book list.)

Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble does a summer reading challenge for kids in 1st through 6th grade every year, with a free book as the prize for each participating kid who logs 8 books on the B&N form. The 2022 full program details and printable pdf form in both English and Spanish is available here.

Pizza Ranch

The Reading Ranch shares one chapter of a ranch-themed story every week in the Wednesday edition of the Sioux City Journal. Kids 12 & under who read all 8 chapters shared this summer can turn in their form to the Sioux City Journal office for a $10 Pizza Ranch gift certificate! The story for summer 2022 is Hooked on Horses by Kay Hively and the first chapter appeared in the 5/17/22 edition of the Sioux City Journal.

Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut is running its classic "Book It!" program with a fun summer edition, Camp Book It, that parents can sign up for here. Kids 4-12 just have to read this summer and once they set their personal goal set by their parent, will get an e-certificate for a free personal pan pizza!

Most other public libraries around the area are also holding summer reading programs, so please check with your local library even if they aren't on this list. They are probably doing something fun that you will want to be a part of!
