Summer is a great time to read, and our local Siouxland libraries do a great job of supporting summer reading with fun programs for kids (and sometimes for adults!) and in 2020, are getting creative with offering a variety of options to help families keep reading while also staying healthy. Here are some of the great summer reading programs happening in and around Sioux City for summer 2020:

Sioux City Public Library

The Sioux City Public Library is offering a variety of programs for kids this summer! Here are some of the fun options:
  • Reading logs go digital: download the free Beanstalk app to participate in this summer's reading challenge! Through the app, you can log reading minutes/books and earn tickets to enter in drawings for prizes. The prizes vary by age, but some of the prizes my kids are eligible for include Duplos, Legos, a 2 person camping tent, a toy camping lantern, and an iPad mini! There are also prizes for adults--a Samsung tablet and several sets of books!
  • Summer Quest Kits: call the library to sign up for a summer quest kit full of activities and books to keep your kids reading this summer! There are quest kits tailored to a variety of ages/grades and the librarians are great at helping you figure out which kit would be best for your kid if you have one with an unusual situation or a grade/age/reading level mismatch. I picked up the kits for my kids, and it was really easy to find them labelled with our name on a library cart outside the Perry Creek Library. Just call the library at (712)255-2926 to arrange pickup! They were even kind enough to send me pictures of all the kits so you can see what they look like:

  • Virtual storytime: every Wednesday at 10:30am, join the librarians of the Sioux City Public Library for an online storytime designed with 2-5 year-olds in mind.
  • Imagination Builders: Early elementary (6-8ish) year olds will love this STEAM based learning time exploring classic fairy tales!
  • Innovation Studio: The Sioux City Public Library teamed up with Woodbury County 4-H to present this interactive STEM group for 9-13 year olds!
  • Summer Dance Party: This fun livestreaming program featuring the music of Duke Otherwise (who delighted the audience at the Sioux City Public Library last summer!) on July 10th at 7pm

Siouxland Coronavirus Cancellations--UPDATED JULY 2020

In spring 2020 we saw over 20,000 cases of COVID-19 in Iowa, more than 15,000 in Nebraska, and more than 5000 cases in South Dakota, many of those right here in Siouxland.
For medical information on COVID-19, please visit the CDC's coronavirus page or Mayo Clinic coronavirus page
Wow, a lot has changed since I first posted this! When I first started this post, the nearest outbreak of COVID-19 was one family in Omaha! Now, we have seen nearly everything in our tri-state area closed to try to flatten the curve, and the number of cases skyrocketed higher than many people thought possible, yet mercifully lower than many of the projection models.
I did a major update on this post in June 2020 and a small update in July 2020, and it will now reflect what is re-opening in our area! I will try to keep it up to date, so check back for updates, but I do not run any of these organizations, and I encourage you to seek out their individual websites and social media to confirm closings that af…
