RAGBRAI 2023 starts here in Sioux City!!

RAGBRAI-- the Des Moines Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa-- began in 1973, making this it's 50th anniversary, and to celebrate, the ride will be 500 miles long, from the Missouri River to the Mississippi River (it's traditional for riders to dip their tires in each!) The 2023 ride will take place from July 22nd through 29th, 2023, and the overnight stops were announced the last weekend of January:

The kickoff expo will take place here in Sioux City, and I'll share more details once they're available!
There are usually around 10,000+ riders each day of RAGBRAI, plus their support teams and friends and family, but this might be an extra big year due to the fun anniversary. So here in Siouxland we should plan on a huge influx of visitors that week and in the days right before RAGBRAI starts!

If you are someone interested in participating in RAGBRAI, their website, RAGBRAI.com, has all the details on how to sign up. You can ride the whole week, or just one leg of it, or just go to the expo for fun.

And if you are looking for details on fun attractions, food, and more in the cities along the route, I share tons of Siouxland fun here on SiouxlandFamilies.com, and you can contact me anytime if you want my advice on where you should go. I also highly recommend Erin Huiatt's Des Moines Parents site to see what is happening in the Des Moines area this summer.

Our local independently owned bike store is Albrecht Cycle, so that will be a great resource too for all the cyclists visiting Sioux City.

Also, Reedy Press has several great (ok, I'm admittedly biased as one of the authors!) guidebooks that will be useful to anyone travelling across Iowa this summer, and they're all available as eBooks if you don't want to lug print copies. There's my book (affiliate links ahead!), 100 Things to do in Sioux City and Siouxland Before You Die, 100 Things to Do in Iowa Before You Die by Sara Broers, and 100 Things to Do in Quad Cities Before You Die by Jonathan Turner.

the story of Sioux City Sarsaparilla

One of the most widely known "Sioux City" things actually isn't a Sioux City thing! If you've seen the movie The Big Lebowski, you may have caught this scene: And Sioux City Sarsaparilla is real (and it really is a good one!) Here's the full story on Sioux City Sarsaparilla: What is Sioux City Sarsaparilla? Sioux City Sarsaparilla is the signature drink from White Rock's Sioux City line . In 1973, White Rock president Albert Morgan wanted to start a western inspired line of classic American soft drinks, with a frontier feel. He chose Sioux City as his inspiration! Sioux City Sarsaparilla is known as "the Grandaddy of all root beers" and has a creamy taste somewhere between root beer and cream soda. And it's the most bought sarsaparilla in the US! Is Sioux City Sarsaparilla made in Sioux City? Nope. Sioux City Sarsaparilla is actually made in New York by White Rock Beverages ! The company actually started not too f

Best Kid Birthday Venues in Sioux City & Siouxland

I'm a big fan of birthday parties, whether they're your immediate family around the dining room table, or a big bash with tons of friends and classmates, and Sioux City has great options for any size party. Here are some things to consider before choosing a venue, and then some recommendations for the best places to host a birthday party in Sioux City! How to choose a birthday venue Choosing a birthday party venue is so simple. And so complicated! Here are some considerations to make before picking. Price : wouldn't it be cool if this wasn't a thing? Unfortunately, it is, and most birthday venues outside of your own home or backyard do have some kind of fee. Make sure the party venue you choose is within your budget, so the birthday party stays fun and not a burden! There are some ways to cut costs, but they often bring risks with them--for example, the city parks are free to use. But if you don't pay to reserve a shelter, that means other people could have alread
