Siouxland Splash Pads

Splash pads are popping up across Siouxland, and in this weather, we sure need them! Splash pads are park areas that don't have any standing water like a pool, but have lots of fountains, dumping buckets, sprayers, and other water features kids can run through, under, over, or past to get nice and wet on a hot day. Looking for more aquatic fun in Siouxland? Check out my   Guide to Siouxland Pools & Swim Lessons  and my post about the Siouxland Splash Waterpark opening in 2025! The Sioux City splashpads as a group get mostly rave reviews from local families, but the most common complaint when one comes up is kids slipping. To avoid this, make sure kids are in water shoes with good grip on the bottom, not in flip flops or other shoes with smooth bottoms. And don't forget your sunscreen! Here's where you can go to join in on the refreshing splash pad fun in and around Sioux City (listed alphabetically--they're too good to rank!) All of the splash pads in Si...

Snow Sports in Siouxland

It's officially snowy fun season in Sioux City! While we don't have huge mountains, we do have plentiful snow most years, and some great places to enjoy snow sports. I researched the best places to enjoy snow sports in Sioux City, Sioux Falls, and our surrounding communities in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota like Hinton, Ponca, and Yankton, and I was inspired by the beautiful scenery, and by the pictures shared with me of families having so much fun out in the cold. I hope you will be too! Here's where to go sledding, tubing, skiing, snowboarding, ice fishing, and ice skating in or near Sioux City. I'm updating for the 2024/2025 winter season as details become available--please let me know if you have info I should add!

Why you need Midwest State Park Adventures this summer!

Note: Amazon links are affiliate links; this does not change your price to purchase but gives me a tiny portion of Amazon's profits if you do choose to buy through one of these links. Thanks in advance if you do make that choice! State parks offer so much fun and variety to families throughout the Midwest, but don't get much fanfare, and I'm so excited to be part of a new project working to fix that! I got to be part of a group of 14 authors, with one writer or couple representing each state in the Midwest to write Midwest State Park Adventures . I wrote the South Dakota chapter, so it was really fun for me to see what all the other writers came up with, but especially the Iowa and Nebraska chapters. Anyway, here's the full scoop on this new book that I'm thrilled to be a part of. What is Midwest State Park Adventures? Midwest State Park Adventures is an anthology travel guidebook that dives deep into the best state parks across 12 Midwest states: Illinois, Indiana,...

Rock Painting Fun Hits Sioux City!

If you keep your eyes peeled, you may spot these rocks or other uniquely painted rocks around Siouxland! A creative new hobby is sweeping the country, and Sioux City families are discovering the fun of rock painting and hunting. The basics To participate, paint rocks, hide them around town, and/or find rocks others have painted and hidden. That's it! The background The painted rock trend started as the Kindness Rocks movement. A woman named Megan in Cape Cod who loves finding interesting rocks, shells, and seaglass along the beach thought others might be cheered by finding fun rocks as well. She started painting rocks and leaving them to be found by others. As she posted pictures to social media of her painted rocks, her friends and families wanted to join in on the fun, and it took off like wildfire. Now there are hundreds of groups around the country and world participating, including the Sioux City Rocks Facebook group where you can post pictures of rocks you...
