Every month I bring you the best things to do in Sioux City and Siouxland, from storytimes and crafts to music festivals, streaming concerts, and holidays from silly to serious.     • 10:30am: Pot Holder Weaving at Art SUX Gallery in downtown Sioux City *Note: event registration FULL.)
    • 10:30am to noon: Saturday Art Lessons: Paper Collage Peace Poems at the Sioux City Art Center for ages 8+, or younger artists accompanied by an adult helper, $7 per artist
    • 1pm: STEM Snowflakes learning event at the Lewis & Clark Intepretive Center. Kids in K-6th grade are invited to learn more about "winter on the trail" and participate in some fun hands-on activities (*Note: event registration FULL)
    • 6pm: Sioux City Musketeers vs Fargo Force home hockey game at the Tyson Events Center

    • 2pm: Winter on the Prairie historical lecture with Russ Gifford at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, FREE with reception to follow
    • 2pm: Handel's Messiah presented live by the Missouri River Choral Society at Blessed Sacrament Church, $10 for adults and $5 for students (rescheduled from a dangerously cold day during the holiday season)

    • 10:30am to noon: Saturday Art Lessons: Paper Collage Picasso-inspired self-portraits at the Sioux City Art Center for ages 8+, or younger artists accompanied by an adult helper, $7 per artist
    • 1pm: Welcome Winter Storytime at the Sergeant Bluff Public Library
    • 6pm: Sioux City Musketeers Hockey vs Lincoln Stars home hockey game at the Tyson Events Center

    • 10am: Winter Tree Identification Hike at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center (*note: the event listing from Woodbury County Conservation recommends this event for adults. it could be a fun date or could be fun to take teens or college age kids who can hike at an adult pace!)
    • 10am: Gathering Seeds Creative Hang at Hardline Coffee/Art SUX for artists and makers of all ages.
    • 10:30am to noon: Saturday Art Lessons: Yarn Art Animals at the Sioux City Art Center for ages 8+, or younger artists accompanied by an adult helper, $7 per artist
    • 10:30am: Once Upon an Artist at the Le Mars Art Center, for ages 2-5, storytime, art time, and a snack for preschoolers, $5 per artist
    • 1-4pm: Ribbon Bound Booklet Craft at the South Sioux City Public Library
    • 1pm: How to Use a Compass free kids class at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, for ids in grades 4-6, registration required
    • 2pm: Space Pirates presented by LAMB Regional Arts Theatre
    • 7:30pm: Cinderella presented by the Sioux City Community Theater

The Story of Loose Meat Sandwiches

There's nothing better in winter than some cozy comfort food. So, I'm excited to tell you all about Sioux City's signature dish, loose meat sandwiches, along with where to buy them and how to make your own! What is a loose meat sandwich? A loose meat sandwich is, at its core, a loose pile of flavorful ground beef, served on a hamburger bun. Many people refer to it as a tavern or tavern sandwich.  Exact seasoning blend varies by maker, but onion, horseradish, mustard powder, ketchup, pepper, and garlic are common, as is a pickle to top, and it should be loose, not in a patty, and fairly dry rather than saucy like a sloppy joe. History of the Loosemeat Sandwich The loose meat sandwich was created in Sioux City in about 1924, although there doesn't seem to be a clear historical record of who made it first. Miles Inn and Ye Olde Tavern were certainly selling it very early on accordingly to local legend, and it's likely the dish was invented at one or the other. Cho
