Valentine's Day is just around the corner! Valentine's Day, February 14th, 2022 is a Monday and there are lots of lovely things to do in Sioux City and Sioux Fall to get into the spirit, including several where you can make a one-of-a-kind gift for your valentine!     • 2/9 at 10am at LaunchPad Children's Museum
    • Included with daily admission or membership.
  • Dads & Daughters Night at the Le Mars Art Center
    • 2/10 at 5:30 and 7pm
  • Owl-entine's Day at Pickled Palette
    • 2/11 at 6pm
    • Includes an appearance from a live owl, under the care of Woodbury County Conservation
  • Galentine's Day at the Winery
    • 2/13 from 4-8pm
    • This event at Oscar Carl Vineyard includes charcuterie, wine, and galentine fun! Probably best for the 21+ crowd (would be so fun for a mom and college aged or adult daughter!)
    • $10 per person

  • Songs of Romance performed by the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra
    • 2/11 at 7:30pm at Washington Pavilion with the SDSO and jazz star Luke Carlsen
  • Toddler Valentine Party 
    • 2/14 at 10am at the Museum of Visual Materials
    • $5 each for ages 2-5pm

The Story of Loose Meat Sandwiches

There's nothing better in winter than some cozy comfort food. So, I'm excited to tell you all about Sioux City's signature dish, loose meat sandwiches, along with where to buy them and how to make your own! What is a loose meat sandwich? A loose meat sandwich is, at its core, a loose pile of flavorful ground beef, served on a hamburger bun. Many people refer to it as a tavern or tavern sandwich.  Exact seasoning blend varies by maker, but onion, horseradish, mustard powder, ketchup, pepper, and garlic are common, as is a pickle to top, and it should be loose, not in a patty, and fairly dry rather than saucy like a sloppy joe. History of the Loosemeat Sandwich The loose meat sandwich was created in Sioux City in about 1924, although there doesn't seem to be a clear historical record of who made it first. Miles Inn and Ye Olde Tavern were certainly selling it very early on accordingly to local legend, and it's likely the dish was invented at one or the other. Cho
