How to Celebrate May the 4th in Siouxland

On May Fourth each year, Star Wars fans across the globe use the silly play on words ("May the Fourth" sounds a lot like "May the Force") as a fun excuse to celebrate their favorite fandom.  And there are several opportunities in Siouxland to make the day extra fun. Here are a few I've seen:

Star Wars Day at the Remax City Centre

Head to the ReMax City Centre on May the 4th, 2024 to catch a showing of Return of the Jedi, widely regarded as the best Star Wars movie. For $5 per person, attendees get to watch the movie but also get a free box of popcorn and a photo opp! There will also be Star Wars themed drinks available for purchase. Doors open at 1pm and the movie starts at 2pm.

ReMax City Centre, 712 4th Street, 2pm

FREE Comic Book Day

Both Acme Comics and Starfighter Comics in Sioux City host Free Comic Book Day each year on the first Saturday in May. In 2024, that falls on May the Fourth, making it extra fun! Whichever store you go to, you can expect free comics appropriate for fans of all ages while supplies last. Comic book publishers work with the comic book stores around the country to print these special promotional copies of comic books to get more readers interested in reading comic books, and for parents it really is a nice way to introduce kids to comic books without having to spend money if you aren't sure that your kids will like them yet.  Acme usually also has costumed characters on Free Comic Book Day, so stay tuned for more info on that.

Acme Comics, 1622 Pierce Street, celebrating Free Comic Book Day on 5/4/24 from 11am to 4pm with appearances from the 501st Legion, Ghostbusters, and more surprises in store!

Starfighter Comics, 4501 Southern Hills Drive, celebrating Free Comic Book Day on 5/4/24 from 10am to 8pm, with an appearance from author/illustrator Josh C. Lyman

The Ranch KC offers family-friendly KC BBQ in Belton, MO

UPDATE: The Ranch KC closed in spring 2026. I am leaving my review up for now in case people are still curious about what it was like. You can check out more of my KC faves here. On a recent trip to Kansas City, I had the opportunity to visit a new restaurant, The Ranch KC, and I was so impressed I wanted to share about it with all of you! My former hometown of Kansas City is one of my favorite travel destinations, not just because I love seeing my family and friends there, but also because there are great places to play, shop, eat, and explore. And The Ranch KC is definitely going on my list of great little places to eat in the KC area for future trips too! The Ranch KC is at its heart a barbeque restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and lots of kid-friendly options, so I definitely recommend it as a great way to get some KC BBQ, especially if you're visiting the area with kids.  Where is The Ranch KC? The Ranch KC is located at 17207 S US Hwy 71 in Belton, ...
