Pirates' Picnic at the Sioux City Art Center

Avast mateys! Ye be invited to the social event of the season:

The Sioux City Art Center is hosting Pirates' Picnic for kids on Saturday, March 22nd, 2025, from 11am to 12:30pm, and I'm so excited!

In 2023, the art center tested out the concept of hosting a kids' event re-using the decor from their elaborate fundraising gala the night before with an Alice in Wonderland themed tea party, and it was a huge success, tickets sold out and attendees had a blast. And this year they are bringing it back, with a "Pirates' Picnic" to go with the Neverland theme for their fundraising gala (which is on Friday night.) So, here's what parents, grandparents, etc. should know about the Pirates' Picnic at the Sioux City Art Center:

Where is the Sioux City Art Center's Pirate Picnic?

The Sioux City Art Center's 2025 Pirates' Picnic will be held inside the main building of the Sioux City Art Center at 225 Nebraska Street in downtown Sioux City, Iowa. There is a small lot with free parking at the center, and there is metered street parking near the art center, which is free on weekends, including during the Pirates' Picnic.

What will be served at the Sioux City Art Center Pirates' Picnic?

The Sioux City Art Center has not yet shared details of the food for the Pirates' Picnic beyond that it is a "box lunch", but at the Wonderland tea they had a box lunch of pinwheel sandwiches, veggie straws, and fruit skewers (and it was delicious,) so I would expect something somewhat similar this year. If they share more specific menu details, I will be sure to update with those!

Fun activities at the Sioux City Art Center Pirates' Picnic

Expect a variety of adorable pirate themed activities including "pirate games," a treasure hunt, and an opportunity to make a Neverland souvenir. Guests will also have the chance to meet costumed characters from Peter Pan. The full, specific list of characters is still subject to change, but may include characters like Captain Hook, Mister Smee, Tinker Bell, and/or Peter Pan. The photo booths from the gala on Friday night will still be up also, so make sure to bring a camera or clear some space on your phone for cute new pictures!

You can check out my Instagram post about the Mad Hatter's Tea Party in 2023 for a bit of an idea of what we can maybe expect, albeit with a different theme this year:

What to wear to the Sioux City Art Center Pirates' Picnic

You can wear just about anything you want for the Sioux City Art Center's Pirates' Picnic, but some things that might be especially fun include:

  • Dress as a pirate! Think stripes, red, black, khaki, skulls, cross bones (there are likely to be lots of toddlers and preschoolers in attendance though, so this not probably the best place for actual scary pirate stuff, more campy cheerful pirates!)
  • Dress as a fairy! Think Tink!
  • Dress as Wendy in a simple blue gown
  • Dress as another favorite character from Peter Pan, like a Lost Boy.

Tickets to the Sioux City Art Center's Pirates' Picnic are $25 per person. Babies under 2 are welcome to attend for free with their family as a "babe in arms" but will not receive their own seat or meal if they do not have a ticket. You can find tickets and more information on both the Pirates' Picnic on Saturday, 3/22 and the Sioux City Art Center Gala on Friday, 3/21 on the Sioux City Art Center website, or feel free to send me an email or message with your question and I'll ask my contacts at the art center!

The Ranch KC offers family-friendly KC BBQ in Belton, MO

UPDATE: The Ranch KC closed in spring 2026. I am leaving my review up for now in case people are still curious about what it was like. You can check out more of my KC faves here. On a recent trip to Kansas City, I had the opportunity to visit a new restaurant, The Ranch KC, and I was so impressed I wanted to share about it with all of you! My former hometown of Kansas City is one of my favorite travel destinations, not just because I love seeing my family and friends there, but also because there are great places to play, shop, eat, and explore. And The Ranch KC is definitely going on my list of great little places to eat in the KC area for future trips too! The Ranch KC is at its heart a barbeque restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and lots of kid-friendly options, so I definitely recommend it as a great way to get some KC BBQ, especially if you're visiting the area with kids.  Where is The Ranch KC? The Ranch KC is located at 17207 S US Hwy 71 in Belton, ...
