Huck and Loona is an adorable picture book, with dreamy colors and a great Northwoods lake vacation aesthetic, and I got a review copy from Beaming Books so I could check it out and help spread the word about it. Here's what you should know about Huck and Loona:
Who wrote and published Huck and Loona?
Huck and Loona is written by Emily Kilgore, a Minnesota-based author, teacher, and mom with three other picture books out so far: the Iheards, The Christmas Book Flood, and the Whatifs. You can learn more about Kilgore and her works on her author website.

Our review of Huck and Loona
Huck and Loona is a 32-page picture book recommended by the publisher for ages 3-8. When I read it with my kids, that seemed accurate as both my 3- and 8-year-olds were captivated by this duo of darling critters.
The front cover immediately caught our interest, with the sweet color palette and Huck the bear and Loona the loon front and center:
Inside, we follow Huck and Loona as they debate the best way to spend the day. But things get heated when the friends realize their vision for the day differ so drastically. Not only do they have different favorite activities, but also different abilities that mean they can't necessarily do the other's favorite activity in the same way.
The pair of adorable animals eventually reconciles and find ways to enjoy the day together safely, with some sweet lessons for kids about compromise. I think it's a great lesson for kids about listening to each other, respecting each other, and the fun can follow when you do. And that we don't have to agree on everything to show each other kindness and even be friends. I think that's a lesson that can apply to an awful lot of situations in life and this is a cute way to discuss it with kids.
We brought Huck and Loona with us to a lake cabin in north Minnesota and read it while we watched loons swim across the water, and it was such a perfect beach or cabin read. But it's also lovely at home, as we remember the beauty of that setting from home. My kids and I loved it and will definitely treasure it for years to come.
I would definitely recommend Huck and Loona to families with preschoolers or kids in early elementary school, as well as school libraries and teachers serving those age groups, and to lake resorts, hotels, and nature centers near lakes who have bookshelves for kids.
