S is for Sioux City: a Sioux City Alphabet book release announcement!

*UPDATE: S is for Sioux City is available in paperback from Amazon as of May 21st, 2026!**

I'm so excited to announce my first ever children's book: S is for Sioux City! I've been working on it for literally years, and it's finally done and ready for the kids of Siouxland and beyond to enjoy! Here's a peek at the cover:

Inside S is for Sioux City

S is for Sioux City is a full-color, 32-page picture book that features local fun for every letter of the alphabet, from the Sioux City Art Center to the Ziplines at Miracle Field. The book is 8.5" square with a glossy cover, and I chose the most premium paper option they had available in hope the colors will look nice! Each letter page features a simple concept like "L is for Loess" which is great when you or your kids want a quick read. Each letter page also has a full paragraph of fun facts for kids who want more info on these cool local attractions! I tried to make it a book my preschooler would sit through the entire thing for, but also that my 9-year-old would enjoy pouring over for a long time. And I think that sort of dual structure achieves that nicely. My preschooler loves reading just what the letter is "for" while my older daughter loves reading every single word. I hope it resonates with your family or your classroom too!

And all 26 letters have photos taken by me personally! I'm not a professional photographer, so I was honestly a bit concerned about this, but I felt like in this age of AI, that the authenticity and being able to truly say that I wrote every bit of the words and took every single photo personally was important and worth it. As a mom of four, I realized that the books with photos my kids love aren't necessarily the ones with the photos that would win a photography contest or be exhibited in a museum, they're just nice photos that show a clear image of the concept that page is about. And in that spirit, I tried to do my best of capturing visually pleasing and conceptually clear photos of these local landmarks, and I really hope your kids like the pictures and the book overall.

About the author

If you've been a Siouxland Families reader for a while you may already know lots about me, but for any new friends who have found me through this post:

Hi! I'm Lindsay and I'm a Sioux City mom of four kids. I grew in San Diego and Kansas City and fell in love with a Sioux City boy when we attended Morningside together. We moved back here after he finished grad school and have had such a great time being part of this community. We love visiting local attractions and sharing about them here on my site, and in the Siouxland Family Friendly Events group on Facebook. I'm the author of two travel guides for adults (affiliate links ahead): 100 Things to do in Sioux City and Siouxland Before You Die (2020) and Surprising I-29 (2024) and I wrote the South Dakota chapter of the award-winning anthology travel guide Midwest State Park Adventures (2023.) S is for Sioux City is my first children's book!

Within the first week or so of June 2026, signed copies of S is for Sioux City will be available at Book People, Sioux City Gifts, the Sioux City Public Museum gift shop, and Jolly Time Koated Kernels.

I will try to plan some fun book signing events (and maybe even a story time!) so watch for more info on those sorts of things.

S is for Sioux City is also available on Amazon. If you order online and would like me to send you a signed book plate

If you know me IRL, I will also have some copies personally that I'm happy to sign and sell directly.

I also plan to offer to donate some copies of the book to the Sioux City Public Library, the Sioux City Community Schools, and the Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools, so hopefully lots of kids will have easy access to it.

*Additional purchasing note: if you are a teacher who is interested in this book, I will have a special super low price available for teachers, and I created a free worksheet to go with the book for an easy classroom activity, and I'd be happy to email you the PDF. I'm also going to post that worksheet PDF file in the Siouxland Family Friendly Events Group once the book is out for any parents or teachers who'd like to use it.

I'm so excited to see the kids of Sioux City enjoying this book, and I hope they learn some cool things about Siouxland as they do!

The Ranch KC offers family-friendly KC BBQ in Belton, MO

UPDATE: The Ranch KC closed in spring 2026. I am leaving my review up for now in case people are still curious about what it was like. You can check out more of my KC faves here. On a recent trip to Kansas City, I had the opportunity to visit a new restaurant, The Ranch KC, and I was so impressed I wanted to share about it with all of you! My former hometown of Kansas City is one of my favorite travel destinations, not just because I love seeing my family and friends there, but also because there are great places to play, shop, eat, and explore. And The Ranch KC is definitely going on my list of great little places to eat in the KC area for future trips too! The Ranch KC is at its heart a barbeque restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and lots of kid-friendly options, so I definitely recommend it as a great way to get some KC BBQ, especially if you're visiting the area with kids.  Where is The Ranch KC? The Ranch KC is located at 17207 S US Hwy 71 in Belton, ...
